Travelling on V/Line Coaches

Travelling on V/Line Coaches

Published: Mon 1 Apr 2024

Travelling on V/Line coaches and train replacement services.

Tickets and reservations

A valid eTicket or paper ticket is required to travel on scheduled coach services. Your ticket can be purchased online or at a staffed V/Line station or authorised ticket agent. You can also buy your ticket by calling 1800 800 007.

Reservations are essential on many scheduled coach services and can be made up to three months in advance.

The availability of travel is not guaranteed if you wait to purchase
an unreserved ticket from the coach driver.

Bikes

Only folding bicycles can be taken on scheduled coaches as long as they:
  • do not exceed the dimensions of 82cm long x 69cm high x 39cm wide
  • have wheel rims no more than 20 inches (51 cm) in diameter
  • can be folded up and placed in a bag or appropriately sized cover
Folding bicycles cannot be stored in overhead luggage racks.

Pedal bicycles can be taken on coach replacement services where space allows in the luggage area.

Food and drink

No hot food or hot drinks can be taken on board V/Line coaches. Cold packaged food and cold drinks with a lid can be brought and consumed on board.

Please be mindful of other customers by avoiding strong smelling food and drink.

Pets and assistance animals

Animals cannot be taken on V/Line coaches, unless they are a certified service animal or have an Assistance Animal Pass.

Certified service animals are Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, animals in training and animals identified by an Assistance Animal Pass or interstate accreditation.

If you are travelling with a domestic pet during an unplanned disruption please speak with a staff member for further assistance.

Luggage

The total luggage limit for all V/Line services is 32 kg. This can be made up of two items of luggage as well as one piece of hand luggage, with no one item weighing more than 16kg.

All luggage must be stored in the luggage compartment, with the exception of one small bag with dimensions less than 40x35x15cm.

Luggage and items carried on coach services that are likely to disturb another person with odour or noise are not permitted.

For any lost property enquiries, please contact Luggage Hall on 03 9619 2588.

Accessibility

Most scheduled V/Line coach services have a lift and an allocated space for passengers with mobility aids.

Not all train replacement coaches are accessible. If trains are cancelled, we will make alternative travel arrangements for you if your mobility aid meets the dimension requirements.

You can call PTV on 1800 800 007 (or 03 9321 5450 for language assistance) to discuss your accessibility requirements before you travel.
