For those who feel at home by the water, Paynesville is Gippsland’s boating capital. Surrounded by lakes, canals and inlets, this charming village is one of Victoria’s best spots for water activities and attractions.

Hire a boat and explore the waterways, or book a cruise and enjoy a leisurely on-board lunch. For an adrenaline rush, local operators can provide equipment and lessons for water-skiing, wakeboarding and even tubing.

Lakes Entrance

Once a quiet fishing village, Lakes Entrance today is a bustling marine town with a large emphasis on water activities and beach culture.

From paddle boats to Sea Safari explorers, if it floats, you’ll find it in Lakes Entrance! Several boat and charter companies operate from the many jetties in Lakes Entrance, offering everything from dolphin watching to marine education.

For golfing enthusiasts, the Lakes Entrance Golf course boasts spectacular views overlooking Ninety Mile Beach and offer a number of ‘stay and play’ deals with nearby hotels and other accommodation providers.

Five minutes' walk from the town centre is the free ferry to Raymond Island, which leaves daily and whisks visitors away to one of the best koala spotting locations in Victoria.

The journey to Paynesville takes approximately five hours from Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station. Board a Gippsland line train to Bairnsdale Station. Change here for a bus service bound for Paynesville. The trip from Bairnsdale to Paynesville takes approximately 30 minutes.

Tip: Travelling on V/Line during off-peak times is more convenient and cheaper!

The journey to Lakes Entrance takes approximately four and a half hours from Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station.

Board a Gippsland line train to Bairnsdale Station. A V/Line bus service bound for Lakes Entrance or Lakes Tyers Beach will then take you from Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance. The trip from Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance takes approximately 45 minutes.

If you’re travelling from a metropolitan station, you’ll also get free travel on trams, trains and buses.
