Coaches replace Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill line trains

Bendigo line

Due to V/Line annual maintenance works, coaches replace Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill Line trains for the entire journey from Monday 23 February to Sunday 8 March.

Coaches will replace all trains between Southern Cross, Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill.

Passengers travelling to and from Huntly Station:
Please be advised that V/Line coach replacements will arrive and depart from the coach stop outside of Huntly IGA at 4/619 Midland Hwy, Huntly VIC 3551.
 
Please allow an additional 60 minutes’ travel time for your journey.

Temporary Train Timetable

9 Mar - 28 Mar 2026

Following major works, temporary speed restrictions will be in place on parts of the Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill lines from Monday 9 March to Saturday 28 March.

During this time, trains will run at slower than normal speeds between Bendigo and Sunbury to allow the tracks to bed down.
 
There will be changes to arrival and departure times so please plan ahead and check the temporary train timetable or journey planner before you travel.

Trains to the city

All Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill trains to the city will depart stations up to 3 minutes earlier.
 
Please note:

• The weekday 7.23am Echuca to Southern Cross train will arrive at Southern Cross 20 minutes later.
• The weekend 7.25am Echuca to Southern Cross train will arrive at Southern Cross 10 minutes later.

From 8.30pm to last service – coaches replace trains to Bendigo for the entire journey.
 
From Bendigo:
From 7.30pm to last service – coaches replace trains to Southern Cross for the entire journey.
 
Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 March

From Southern Cross Station:
From 8pm to last service – coaches replace trains to Bendigo/Epsom/Eaglehawk for the entire journey.
 

From Bendigo:
From 9pm to last service – coaches replace trains to Southern Cross for the entire journey.

Midland Highway bridge works

23 Feb - 7 Mar 2026

Bendigo line

V/Line crews will carry out bridge maintenance and upgrade works in Castlemaine from Monday 23 February to Saturday 7 March. 

What we are doing

V/Line will carry out water proofing works on the historic Midland Highway bridge in Castlemaine. These works will ensure the bridge continues to provide a vital connection for passengers on the Bendigo Line.

Works will take place around the clock from Monday 23 February to Saturday 7 March.

Traffic impacts

To safely complete these works, our crews require unlimited access to the bridge while V/Line trains are not running.

The Midland Highway bridge underpass will remain open to motorists and pedestrians during this time. 

Speed restrictions will be in place and localised traffic management will be used to hold traffic as required. Please allow extra time when moving through the area.

What to be aware of 

There will be regular movement of heavy machinery and trucks, and a significant amount of dust is expected at the work site.

There will also be a high level of construction noise at some times.

Bendigo Station car park changes

19 Feb - 10 Mar 2026

Bendigo line

Car parking in the Railway Place car park at Bendigo Station will be reduced by approximately 45 spaces from Thursday 19 February until Tuesday 10 March.

This area will be used as the replacement coach layover while coaches replace trains between Bendigo, Echuca, Swan Hill and Southern Cross. 

Car spaces are available in the V/Line car park off McLaren Street.

During this time there will be temporary changes to the car park, including:

• Relocating the taxi zone
• Adding an additional wheelchair accessible taxi zone
• Creating a 5-minute parking zone

Track maintenance works in Elphinstone & Chewton

20 Feb - 12 Mar 2026

V/Line is carrying out ballast renewal works from Friday 20 February to Thursday 12 March at the following locations:

• Urquhart Street level crossing, Elphinstone
• White Gum Track level crossing, Chewton

Geelong line

Due to V/Line maintenance works, coaches replace evening trains on the Geelong Line from Sunday 15 to Tuesday 17 March.

From Southern Cross Station:
From 9pm to last service – coaches replace trains from Southern Cross to Waurn Ponds for the entire journey.
 
From Waurn Ponds:
From 9pm to last service – coaches replace trains from Waurn Ponds to Southern Cross for the entire journey.

Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 March

From Southern Cross Station:
From 8.30pm to last service – coaches replace trains from Waurn Ponds to Southern Cross for the entire journey.

From Waurn Ponds:
From 8pm to last service – coaches replace trains from Waurn Ponds to Southern Cross for the entire journey.

All train services will be replaced by a mix of express and stopping all stations coach services, for more information, please see a V/Line staff member.

F1 Grand Prix and Moomba

8 Mar 2026

Geelong line

To help you get home from the Australian Grand Prix and Moomba on Sunday 8 March, V/Line will run the following special services on the Geelong Line.

From Southern Cross:
Additional train departs Southern Cross at 9.23pm. This train will stop at Deer Park, Tarneit, arriving at Wyndham Vale at 9.55pm.

Additional train departs Southern Cross at 10.40pm. This train will stop at Deer Park, Tarneit, arriving at Wyndham Vale at 11.12pm.

Additional train departs Southern Cross at 10.48pm. This train will stop at Ardeer, Deer Park, Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Cobblebank, Melton, arriving at Bacchus Marsh at 11.30pm.

Additional train departs Southern Cross at 11.05pm. This train will stop at Ardeer, Deer Park, Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Cobblebank, Melton, Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, Ballarat, arriving at Wendouree at 12.33am.
 

Service changes on the Bairnsdale Line

8 Feb - 31 Mar 2026

Gippsland line

Bairnsdale Line
 
Due to track upgrade works, temporary speed restrictions will be in place on a section of the Bairnsdale Line from Sunday 8 February to Tuesday 31 March.

During this time, trains will run at slower than normal speeds between Bairnsdale and Rosedale to allow the tracks to bed down.

Trains to the city

All trains to the city will depart up to 6 minutes earlier from Bairnsdale, Stratford, Sale and Rosedale stations.

Please note that on Monday 9 March, trains will run to a Saturday timetable for the Labour Day public holiday.
 

Coaches replace evening trains on the Traralgon and Bairnsdale lines

Due to V/Line works, coaches replace evening Traralgon and Bairnsdale line trains for part of the journey on Sunday 15 March to Wednesday 18 March.

From Southern Cross Station:
From 8.30pm to last service – coaches will replace trains from Southern Cross to East Pakenham. Trains will run from East Pakenham to Traralgon.

From Traralgon:
From 7pm to last service – trains will terminate at East Pakenham. Coaches will replace trains from East Pakenham to Southern Cross.
 
Monday 16 to Wednesday 18 March

From Southern Cross Station:
From 8.30pm to last service – coaches will replace trains from Southern Cross to East Pakenham. Trains will run from East Pakenham to Traralgon.

From Traralgon:
The 7.11pm to last service – trains will terminate at East Pakenham. Coaches will replace trains from East Pakenham to Southern Cross.

From Bairnsdale:
The 6.10pm Bairnsdale to Southern Cross service will terminate at East Pakenham. Coaches will run from East Pakenham to Southern Cross.
 
 
Coaches will not stop at Flinders Street, Richmond, Clayton or Berwick stations.

Please allow an additional 60 minutes’ travel time for your journey.

Level crossing removal works are taking place in Dandenong on the Pakenham Line as well V/Line maintenance works.  During this time, coaches replace trains for all or part of the journey from Friday night 20 March to last service Monday 23 March.
 
Friday 20 March – night only

From Southern Cross Station:
From 8pm to last service – coaches will replace trains from Southern Cross to Traralgon.

From Traralgon:
From 7pm to last service – coaches will replace trains from Traralgon to Southern Cross.

From Bairnsdale:
The 6.10 pm Bairnsdale service to Southern Cross will terminate at Traralgon. Coaches will run from Traralgon to Southern Cross.
 
 
Saturday 21 March to Sunday 22 March

Coaches replace all trains between Southern Cross and Traralgon from first to last service.
A temporary timetable will be in place.
 
 
Monday 23 March

From first service to 7pm – Coaches replace trains from Southern Cross to East Pakenham. Trains will run from East Pakenham to Traralgon and Bairnsdale

After 7 pm – Coaches replace trains from Southern Cross to Traralgon.

Level Crossing maintenance works in Nar Nar Goon

20 Mar - 22 Mar 2026

Gippsland line

V/Line crews will carry out maintenance works on the Nar Nar Goon level crossing from 11pm Friday 20 March to 9.30pm Sunday 22 March.
 
Works will take place around the clock, and the level crossing will be closed to motorists
and pedestrians.

During this time, crews will:
• Upgrade the tracks at the level crossing
• Upgrade the pedestrian crossing
• Renew the asphalt on the road that runs across the level crossing
 
What to expect
Nar Nar Goon Road will be closed at the level crossing.
Detours and signage will be in place as well as localised traffic management.
Please note that the road detour will take motorists up to 20 minutes so please allow extra time when travelling through the area.
 
Pedestrian crossing closed
The level crossing will be closed to pedestrians. A taxi service will be available to move pedestrians from one side of the level crossing to the other, via the road detour in place.
This is a turn up and go system. If the taxi is not there when you arrive at the crossing, please speak to traffic management staff. Due to traffic conditions the taxi may take 20 minutes to complete the detour.
The level crossing will re-open to motorists and pedestrians from 9.30pm on Sunday 22 March.
