Botanical Gardens Malmsbury

Botanical Gardens Malmsbury

Considered one of the prettiest botanic gardens in Victoria, the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens were established in 1863 under the guidance of prominent 19th century botanist, Baron Ferdinand von Mueller.

Covering 6.3 hectares, the gardens cleverly utilise the natural topography and features and include an ornamental lake from what originally was wetlands and floodplain of the adjacent Coliban River. One of the additional features of the gardens is the view of the historic 1859 railway viaduct.

Erected by the government of the time from the proceeds of gold, the 500 foot long Basalt Bridge still carries the Melbourne to Bendigo rail line over the Coliban River.
