Ballarat Family Itinerary

In the heart of Victoria’s Goldfields region, Ballarat is a fascinating town steeped in history. Once a home to gold miners in the 1850s, present day Ballarat is filled with treasures of a different kind, including wildlife parks, historical attractions and a thriving arts and cultural scene.

Experience all the adventure and excitement of the gold rush at Sovereign Hill, where a bygone era is brought back to life in captivating detail. Wander the main street filled with colourful characters and horse-drawn carts and try your luck as you pan for gold.

For a history lesson the kids won’t soon forget, be sure to stay for the Blood on the Southern Cross sound and light show, re-enacting the Eureka Stockade. V/Line offers a “Goldrush Special” for travellers who are visiting Ballarat and Sovereign Hill. The package entitles you to bus transport from Ballarat to Sovereign Hill and back, as well as some discounts on attractions and travel.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite panning for gold, treat yourself and the family to lunch. Ballarat has an array of stylish restaurants, cosy cafes and relaxed clubs brimming with local specialties, food and wine.

After lunch, hire a bike from a local operator and cycle to the Lake Wendouree, where you’ll instantly feel transported to another world. If you prefer to get even closer to nature, The Ballarat Wildlife Park is the perfect place to spend the afternoon. The park is a family owned and operated conservation park where the animals can roam free. Children can experience being up close with koalas, wombats, kangaroos and crocodiles. Buses from Ballarat town centre are available for transport to the park.

For a peaceful afternoon, take the family to the Art Gallery of Ballarat, located just 50m from Ballarat Station on Lydiard St North. As Australia’s oldest regional gallery with a busy exhibition schedule, the Gallery is an exciting and dynamic place with a broad selection of Australian paintings, sculptures, ceramic work and more.

If you would like to extend your stay in Ballarat, there are numerous accommodation options catering for every family. For more information or a recommendation, visit the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre, conveniently located in the centre of the town.
