First Class carriages have larger reclining seats with more leg room and meal trays.

The seats are four abreast with about 52 seats in each carriage compared to 88 in economy.

See inside First Class using the virtual train tour of a refurbished 'N-set' carriage.

First Class upgrade
First class is simply an upgrade fee on top of a standard economy fare:

  • travelling less than 100 kilometres = $4
  • travelling more than 100 kilometres = $8

First Class multi-card
You cannot buy a first class periodical ticket (weekly, monthly or date-to-date).

If you wish to travel in first class and are a periodical ticket holder, we suggest you purchase a $35 first class multicard which offers:

  • ten first class upgrades on journeys less than 100 kilometres
  • five first class upgrades on journeys more than 100 kilometres
The first class multicard is undated, is flexible and can be used on the occasions when you want to travel in first class.

myki
If you are travelling on a myki and wish to travel First Class on a long distance service you can do so but you will need to purchase an upgrade ticket.

First Class upgrades can be purchased from the ticket window before travelling - your myki cannot be used to pay for the upgrade.

You should touch on and off your myki as normal even when travelling with a First Class upgrade.
