The Warrnambool May Racing Carnival is one of Australia’s hallmark country racing events.

Every year thousands of racing enthusiasts make the annual pilgrimage to the coastal town of Warrnambool to view Australia’s finest jumps horses, immerse in the thrill of racing, be inspired by autumn race fashions, and enjoy unmatched country hospitality.

The three day Carnival is renowned for its rich racing traditions and home to the internationally acclaimed Grand Annual Steeplechase, the longest of its kind in Australia. An expedition to the hill for a birds-eye view of the visually breathtaking 5,500m race is an iconic visitor experience.

Brierly Day (Day 1)

Day 1 features the $150,000 3YB Scotty Stewart Brierly Steeplechase (3450m) as well as the iconic Ladies Luncheon.

Galleywood Day (Day 2)
The Sovereign Resort Galleywood Hurdle is the major jumping race of the day. The race is run over 3450 metres and offers prize money of $150,000. The listed Midfield Group Wangoom Handicap is the clubs main sprint and is one of the feature races of the carnival. The race, runs over 1200 metres, offers prize money of $175,000.

Grand Annual Day (Day 3)
The $350,000 Waterfront by Lyndoch Living Grand Annual Steeplechase is the highlight of the jumping year. The race - first held in 1872 - covers 5,500 metres and with 33 obstacles, has more fences than any other steeplechase in the world. The uphill and down dale terrain also makes it one of the toughest. The Warrnambool Cup also has a prestigious history and traditionally attracts a strong field. The race is run over 2350 metres, has Listed status and offers prize money of $250,000.

Closest station/stop

Travelling from Melbourne, take the Melbourne to Warrnambool Service (via Geelong) getting off at Warrnambool Station. Exit the station onto Merri Street and take the Route 5 (Lake Pertobe Loop) service getting off at Koroit Street Interchange. From there take the Route 3 (Deakin University) service getting off at Sanwill Avenue/Garden Street.

 From there it is a short walk of 8 minutes (700m) to the Racecourse, the directions are as follows:

Walk south on Garden Street towards Sanwill Avenue, then turn right onto Moore Street and then turn left towards Warrnambool Racecourse.
