What you can take – Carriage of large items

What you can take – Carriage of large items

Information on taking your bike on the train.

Surfboards

Surfboards can be carried free of charge on V/Line trains, but passengers are strongly advised to avoid weekday services that:

·         arrive into the city between 07:00 and 09:30

·         depart the city between 16:00 and 19:00

Surfboards must not obstruct passageways or doorways and must not inconvenience other passengers. As space is limited, please bear in mind it might not be possible to travel with your surfboard on the particular service you plan to take.

Look for this sign appearing on Sprinter trains to know which door to enter the train when carrying any large items:

We strongly recommend that you call us on 136 196 ahead of travelling when you wish to take a surfboard on the train.

On some V/Line services, items should be stowed in the location(s) designated by the conductor. Your conductor will advise you if this is the case.

All items are carried by V/Line at your own risk. Items must be checked in at least 30 minutes prior to departure on reserved services. We strongly recommend that you call V/Line ahead of travelling when wishing to take such items onboard.

Prams, pushers, shoppers and golf club buggies

These items can be carried free of charge, as long as the access, comfort and safety of other passengers are not affected.

On locomotive-hauled services, these items can be given to the conductor to stow in the train’s luggage van if space is available.  The items must be presented at the station at least 20 minutes before departure.  These items can also be checked in.

Other large items

Surf skis, sailboards, canoes and similar items are not permitted in passenger carriages on trains.

Wheelchairs

See our
Customers with disabilities page for more information.

Scooters and motorised vehicles

Petrol-driven vehicles are not permitted on public transport for safety reasons.

While wheelchairs are permitted on accessible services, scooters or motorised vehicles that exceed standard wheelchair dimensions (800mm x 1300mm) are not permitted.

Coaches

V/Line coaches do not carry bicycles, surfboards, surf skis, sailboards, canoes and similar items (exception: see Folding Bicycles, below.)

There is an exception for coach services along coastal routes where surfboards and boogie boards may be carried, subject to available space on the day of travel.

Passengers are reminded that this applies to both the forward and return legs of the journey.
