Travelling with children
Travelling on long trips can be challenging for young children. The key to
ensuring that children (as well as adults!) enjoy the journey is to plan ahead.
Here are a few ideas:
V/Line Activity Sheets
Why not download our Activity sheets (PDF, 1MB)
which are part of our Train Training program, aimed
at encouraging children to play it safe around trains.
Pack some sugar-free treats
Reward children for good behaviour with healthy snacks that they’ll enjoy
eating. Avoid sugary treats that may make them more restless.
Maps
Maps are a great way to entertain children as they travel. Bring along a map of
Victoria so they can see the towns they are passing through. See our Network Maps page.
Blindfolded word games
To keep more than one child busy, try a blindfolded word game. One child closes
their eyes while the other child “writes” words on their opened palm.
Counting games
Think of all the things you will see during your trip and make a list of things
for the kids to count. Some items you may want to include are:
- Trains
- Train stations
- Animals
- Trucks
- Cars of a particular colour
Cat’s cradle
It’s amazing how much fun kids can have with a piece of string! Tie a length of
string into a loop and see how many creations the children can make.
Break up the journey
If you’re travelling on day return tickets and you’re concerned about how your
children will cope with a long journey, remember you can always stop along the
way at no extra cost.
For more details on which
ticket types allow a break in the journey, please see Ticket Types & Conditions.
