Southern Cross Station (formerly Spencer Street Station) is V/Line’s ‘hub’ station.  All V/Line trains and many coach services depart from or arrive here.

It has undergone a major redevelopment that provides V/Line passengers with an exciting new terminal.

The station has been transformed into a functional arrival point for international, interstate, regional and suburban visitors.  It can now handle 30,000 passengers an hour in peak periods.

As well as providing modern facilities, the new station has unique roof design that naturally extracts internal air and fumes from the station without using electric fans.

Coach Terminal

The coach terminal is beside the train station and can be accessed from Spencer Street (opposite Little Bourke St) or from within the station itself - see station layout map (PDF, 42KB) .

Travellers Aid

The station’s Travellers Aid centre is available for travellers with special needs.  It is open daily from 07:00 until 23:00 hours.

It provides:

• Travellers ‘meet and assist’ on request
• An air conditioned lounge
• Tourist and general information
• Showers
• Private rest rooms
• Baby change facilities
• Assistance for stranded travellers

The luggage hall

The luggage hall is under the Bourke Street Bridge between the train station and coach terminal.

V/Line passengers on locomotive hauled long-distance services can directly check their luggage into the luggage hall. The new luggage hall is based on the same principle as an airline check-in counter and is a great improvement for V/Line passengers.
