Level Crossing – Upgrades
Who upgrades level
crossings?
- Risk
assessments of level crossings determine when and how they are upgraded.
Factors considered include the volume of road and rail traffic, pedestrian
use, the crossing's crash history, visibility for motorists and train
drivers, the number of rail tracks at the crossing, other public risks and
the cost of the upgrade.
In Victoria, the level
crossing upgrade program is jointly managed by the Public Transport
Division of the Department of Transport, VicRoads and VicTrack in liaison
with rail operators.
- VicTrack
also manages and maintains the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model
(ALCAM) - a nationally accepted risk model that establishes which level
and pedestrian crossings should be upgraded.
