Help with Podcasts & Video files
Podcasts
You can listen
to Podcasts on several parts of the V/Line website – especially Discover Victoria.
Podcasts are
.mp3 files (see below for more info), which you can either listen to ‘live’ or
download to listen to later.
To listen to
Podcasts, simply click the link and your default music/media player will open
and play the file.
If you’d rather download
the file to listen to later:
PC users: right click on the
"Download Episode" link and choose "Save Target As...",
"Save Link As...", or a similar option.
Mac users: hold CTRL and click,
then select "Download Linked File".
You should then be asked where to
save the episode on your computer. All episodes are mp3 audio files.
Once the file is saved, you can open the file in your
chosen music/media player.
What is .mp3?
MP3
is a popular digital music format for sound files, that are small in size but
still reasonably high quality.
This makes it a very suitable format for downloading from the web – audio files
can be reduced to around a tenth of their normal size without significant loss
of quality. This is achieved by stripping out a lot of the recorded information
that our ears aren't able to hear, like the sounds that are outside our
hearing range.
Video files
Our website also contains video files. These
can be viewed or downloaded as shown above for Podcasts, but you will need
video playback software such as Windows Media Player or Quicktime.
Please note that some video files are very
large. They can take a long time to load on dial-up or slow broadband
connections. The video file size (in megabytes - MB) is shown in the link.
1 Megabyte [1MB] = approx. 1000 Kilobytes [1000KB].
