Victoria’s New Ticketing Solution – “myki”

Myki - Victoria’s new ticketing system

Updated 29 December 2009

What is myki?

Myki is a durable plastic card – similar in size to a credit card – which you may use to pay for travel on Victorian public transport.

Myki cards are reusable as they store value, and can be topped up, allowing you to carry it with you in your wallet or purse to travel at your convenience.

The new smartcard will be progressively rolled out across the Victorian public transport system throughout 2010.  In the meantime, V/Line paper tickets and Metcards will remain valid until the roll-out is complete.

Where can I use myki?

Effective 29 December 2009, myki may now be used on:

·         Metro and V/Line trains within Zones 1 and 2 only; and

·         Regional town buses in Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, Seymour and the Latrobe Valley.

Myki may NOT currently be used on:

·         V/Line train and coach services outside Zone 2 (including Zone B);

·         Yarra Trams services;

·         Melbourne buses; and

·         Other regional town bus systems not listed above.

Which ticket is best for me?

If you only use Metro Trains services or V/Line trains to and from Ardeer, Deer Park, Rockbank, Melton, Diggers Rest, Sunbury, Craigieburn and Pakenham, then you may want to consider getting a myki from the myki website (new window).  However, you may also continue to use Metcards from these locations until further notice.  When myki is fully functional, Metcards will be phased out.

If you only travel in Zones 1 and 2, but also use Melbourne's trams or buses in addition to your train travel, you may be best to take up the myki offer in early 2010 when it has also rolled out to these modes of transport.  Keep using Metcards in the meantime.

If you are like most V/Line customers and travel to regional Victoria outside of Zone 2, then you'll need to keep using V/Line paper tickets until further notice.  Don't forget that a V/Line ticket also gives you free travel in Zones 1 and 2 in Melbourne so you don't need a myki or Metcard to use the trams or buses - just keep showing your V/Line ticket.  We'll let you know when V/Line makes the switch to myki throughout 2010.

Where can I purchase a myki?

As the myki roll-out expands further across Victoria, it will become available from more locations.  However, at this stage myki cards are not available from V/Line stations.  If you would like a myki, and only travel within Zones 1 and 2, you will need to purchase one from the myki website (new window).

Please revisit this page regularly for updates on the myki roll-out across the V/Line system.
