Interurban (short distance) & Intercity (long distance)
The difference between an Interurban (short distance) and an
Intercity (long distance) service is simply the distance the train travels, as
explained below:

Interurban services
Trains that operate wholly within the area between Melbourne and
Marshall / Ballarat / Eaglehawk / Seymour and Traralgon
stations.
(i.e. within the lighter shaded
colours in the diagram above).
Intercity services
Trains that operate between Melbourne and stations beyond
Marshall / Ballarat / Eaglehawk / Seymour and Traralgon stations.
(i.e. the darker shaded colours in the diagram above).
