Group travel Group discounts are available on V/Line trains and buses, subject to availability.
At least 12 people must travel together, to and from the same locations. Return journeys (if applicable) must be done under the same conditions. The group must purchase the tickets at the same time and place.
Group discounts are available to both general groups and school groups.

Note: on buses, but we may not be able to accommodate your group due to limited seating capacity.

Where to purchase 12 - 19 passengers travelling by train only can purchase tickets from any V/Line ticket sales outlet (subject to availability).
20+ passengers (12+ if you're travelling by bus) need to have travel confirmed by our Group Travel Co‑ordinator.
Submitting your applicationAn application can be made in four ways.
- use Plan a journey to choose your dates of travel. You can then add the number of passengers and calculate the fare before submitting the request online.
- visit a staffed V/Line station where they will help you complete a group travel application form.
- email your request to grouptravel@vline.com.au

Discount rateGroup travel is charged at concession fares. This is approx. 50% cheaper than standard adult fares (Mondays to Fridays) and approximately 30% cheaper at weekends.
Give as much notice as you canWe suggest submitting all group travel applications at least 30 days prior to departure to maximise the chances of us accommodating you on your chosen services.
All group travel must be made at least 7 days prior to travel.
However, if your group is 12 - 19 people, travelling by train only, you can purchase tickets from any V/Line ticket sales outlet before departure.
When you can travelGroup travel is subject to availability and we cannot accomodate some groups at peak times.
Special events, school holidays, sporting events, Seniors Week, Easter, Melbourne Show and other busy times may also be unavailable.
We'll try accommodate your request, but if we're are unable to, we’ll let you know of any alternative options.
ConfirmationSubmitting an applications does not mean your booking is confirmed. When it is, we will contact you.
We’ll endeavour to finalise your group travel arrangements within 14 days.
Note: during busy times this time may be extended. If we’re able to confirm your booking we’ll provide a booking reference number. Quote this number at your local staffed V/Line station to collect tickets.
Maximum group sizeThere is no maximum number. However, due to the operational logistics of carrying large groups, it may be necessary to split across multiple services or deny your request.
Allocated seatingSeats will be set aside for groups with 20 or more people.
On unreserved services, the Conductor will set aside enough seats to cater for your group.
PaymentAll group bookings should be paid for and tickets collected at least 48 hours before departure.
BikesThis is sometimes possible, when groups travelling on locomotive‑hauled, reserved services (subject to operational requirements).
Unfortunately, we’re unable to accommodate groups with bicycles on our VLocity and Sprinter services or on any bus service.
RefundsGroup travel tickets can be refunded provided they are presented to a V/Line booking office under the following conditions: Unreserved ticketsPresent to a V/Line booking office or agent up to the day before the departure date printed on the ticket. Reserved ticketsThe booking must first be cancelled by contacting our Group Travel Coordinator on (03) 9619 2338.
Alternatively present the tickets to a V/Line booking office or agent before the departure date of the service. Tickets may be presented for refund up to seven days from the cancellation date.
Note: individual unused tickets cannot be presented for refund. No administration fee applies.
Pensioner free vouchers, seniors vouchers & Family Traveller These cannot be used with Group Travel. Ticket combinations are not allowed with group travel.
Chartering a busOur main priority is providing public transport and we do not charter any buses.
Where we can, we'll accomodate your group, but if you still require a chartered coach - please contact a coach company in your local area.
