Eureka Centre

Image: Eureka centreTo see the real location of the Eureka rebellion, head to the aptly named suburb of Eureka.

Located on the field where it all happened is the Eureka Centre (new window), which tells the story of the rebellion, its origins and the ongoing repercussions for democracy in Australia.

See a mock trial in the courtroom of the miners who rebelled against authority, and learn the story of the Pikeman’s Dog, who was awarded a purple cross by the RSPCA for guarding the body of his master, who died in the rebellion.

Visit the Eureka Centre’s website (new window) for more information.

Getting there

The Eureka Centre is located in East Ballarat, on the corner of Eureka and Rodier Streets.

To get there, catch a V/Line train to Ballarat Station, and from there catch bus route 8 to Eureka Street. Your V/Line ticket is valid for travel on Ballarat’s local buses.

Catching V/Line there is easier and cheaper than you might think

$41.60 – that’s how little it costs for 2 adults and up to 4 children travelling from Melbourne to Ballarat and back during off peak times, including weekends.

Fare calculated using the Family Traveller fare, where up to 2 kids (per fare paying adult) travel free. Conditions apply – see vline.com.au/familytraveller for more info.

Full fare, Off Peak fare = $20.80 return

Concession fare, Off Peak fare (Mon-Fri) = $10.40 return, and Concession fare, Off Peak fare (weekend) = $14.80 return

Peak services can be busy, so we encourage families to travel at off peak times, if possible.

Trains between Ballarat and Melbourne run frequently (Timetables) and a one-way trip takes approximately 76 minutes.

If your journey begins or ends in metropolitan Melbourne, pre-purchase your V/Line ticket.  On the day, you can use it to travel on Melbourne metropolitan public transport from your front door all the way to your arrival station at no extra cost.  In addition, your valid V/Line ticket is also valid for travel on Ballarat’s local bus network.

See Your V/Line ticket is also a Metcard for more info.
