Golden Dragon Museum
Chinese
migration at the time of the gold rush is celebrated at the Golden Dragon Museum, which houses the world’s oldest Imperial Chinese dragon.
The dragon
Loong was given to the miners of Bendigo by the Chinese emperor. It was the
only one to survive the destruction of Imperial artefacts in the Chinese
Cultural Revolution.
Loong is so precious that he is no longer taken out of the museum for the
traditional Easter parade, but his younger friend, Sun Loong, regularly
participates. Sun Loong requires one person to carry his head, three people to
carry his neck and 52 people to carry his body.
This
little piece of China in the centre of Bendigo is an interesting way to while
away an hour, and an even better spot to enjoy Chinese delicacies, or Yum Cha
on the weekends.
