Experience Old Castlemaine Gaol

Image: Inside Castlemaine GaolCome and experience the unique and moving history of the Old Castlemaine Gaol – just a short walk up the hill from Castlemaine Station

Built in the 1850s to try to stem some of the most unruly behaviour on the Goldfields, Castlemaine Gaol soon gained a reputation for being the worst Gaol in Victoria.

One prisoner in 1865 stated: “Melbourne is a hotel, Pentridge is a boarding house but Castlemaine is Hell!”

Fresh scones and slices are available from the Café and the winter menu features delicious homemade soup and crusty bread, warm focaccias with choice of fillings, chunky beef pies, steak sandwiches and BLT’s. All made daily on the premises.

Special offer: Show your valid V/Line ticket for a free tea or coffee.

For more information visit the Old Castlemaine Gaol website (new window)
