Made in Hollywood, Bendigo Art Gallery
3 December 2011 - 12 February 2012
Made in Hollywood: Photographs from the John Kobal Foundation at Bendigo Art Gallery features more than 90 photographs taken from 1925 to the early 1960s.
Organised by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California, this Australian exclusive exhibition considers the carefully constructed images and celebrity of actors including Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Mary Pickford, the Marx Brothers, Katherine Hepburn, James Stewart, Rita Hayworth, Vivien Leigh, Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock, Ronald Reagan, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Drawn from the unrivalled archives of late author and collector John Kobal, the exhibition features the work of more than fifty photographers. John Kobal was the first collector who sought to understand the vital role that photographers played in the
creation of stars. As the prolific author or editor of more than thirty books, John
Kobal was among the earliest historians to shift the focus away from the stars to the Hollywood photographers themselves.
