DunkeldSet at the southern entrance to the Grampians in the shadow of Mt Sturgeon and Mt Abrupt, Dunkeld is a beautiful village with a stunning backdrop. The well-kept main street is dotted with shops, cafes and restaurants while the thriving arts community provides a number of galleries and museums. One of Dunkeld’s main attractions is the Arboretum. Situated at the end of a pleasant walk along the small creek through the town, this well-loved sanctuary has been cleverly planned. The walking track meanders through hundreds of trees including many giant red gums and takes in a series of small lakes that are crossed by several bridges. For the more vigorous visitor, a hike up Mount Sturgeon, Mount Abrupt or the Piccaninny gives the visitor a great view of the entire Southern Grampians range.
The history of this fascinating district is well presented and documented at the Dunkeld Museum, located at the corner of Wills and Templeton Streets. The Visitor Information Centre is also well worth a visit. For those looking for emus and kangaroos, you are certain to find them on the golf course, a peaceful oasis, particularly later in the afternoon.
Don’t miss the Dunkeld races, the Melbourne Cup of the bush, run in November each year.
