Chiltern
Located halfway between Wodonga and Wangaratta, Chiltern was established in the late 1850s gold rush period.

Explore the trails through the nearby Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park, which are dotted with goldfield relics and beautiful wildlife, as well as breath-taking views of the countryside from the Mount Pilot Lookout.

There are more than 20 National Trust buildings in town; even the railway station has original brickwork and cast-iron drinking fountains from the nineteenth century.

A ten minute walk from the station is Main Street where visitors will find the original Federal Standard newspaper office and the tourist information centre.

The town’s history is lovingly showcased at the Chiltern Athenaeum, a library and museum full of historical items and records. The Athenaeum also organise a variety of walking tours of the town.

If you prefer a slower pace, take a self-guided tour; must-sees include Dow’s Pharmacy, which operated on the site for more than 100 years and the The Star Theatre. There are also original 1850s police cells, and the ‘Lakeview’ homestead, the former childhood home of author Henry Handel Richardson, who wrote the Australian classic The Getting of Wisdom.
Antique lovers will enjoy the annual Antique Fair in August, one of the largest antique shows in regional Victoria.

On the fourth Saturday of each month, the Chiltern Monthly Market offers a great range of items. Visitors can try local produce, source antiques or simply peruse the many stalls available.

Each year in June, the Chiltern Art Exhibition gives locals and visitors the chance to view and purchase a range of works from local artists.

In October, the Chiltern Box Ironbark Festival celebrates the natural environment and the town's history with guided walks and other outdoor activities, along with roving and live entertainment
