Castlemaine
Formatted Text
Castlemaine is a picturesque township, rich with gold rush history. It offers a great range of activities to keep any visitor entertained, just a short stroll away from the station.

Step back in time with a ride on the Victorian Goldfields Railways, an authentic steam train which links the historic centres of Castlemaine and Maldon. Travelling twice a week, the train travels through dense Box-Ironbark forest and across a region that saw some of the biggest gold finds in Australia’s history.

Take a tour of the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum, which boasts an extensive collection of Australian art works and historical items depicting the region’s vibrant past. Take your art experience full-circle by exploring the numerous studios and smaller art galleries nestled in the streets.

The Buda Historic Home & Garden is a must-see. Built in 1861, visitors can tour the home and see the collections of arts and crafts, explore the three acres of gardens, or purchase heritage shrubs from the nursery.

The Castlemaine Botanical Gardens offers the perfect spot for a picnic lunch, with beautiful open lawns and elm and oak tree-lined avenues, ideal for a post-lunch walk.
The region produces outstanding food and wine, with local bakeries, cafes and fining dining restaurants satisfying all needs of the hungry visitor.

The Castlemaine State Festival takes place every second year in April (the next is in 2013) and celebrates the strong arts and culture presence in the town.
