Nestled between famous gold towns Ballarat and Ararat, the historical town was once inhabited by Jajowarrung Aborigines until gold prospectors settled there in 1854.
With its gold rush heritage, Beaufort is home to some of Victoria’s most beautiful historic buildings. Grab a map from the town information centre and make your way through the town’s wide, leafy streets to admire heritage buildings such as the Old Post Office.
The main street has a great range of cafes, trattorias and local produce stores where you can sample some of the well known local wines and produce.
Keen collectors can wander past the many gorgeous antique and second-hand stores located only a few minutes walk from the train station.
Beaufort is also home to the renowned music festival ‘Rainbow Serpent’ which draws more than 7,000 people over the Australia Day weekend to listen to a unique blend of music.
Getting thereFrom Southern Cross Station, take the Ararat bound train on the Ballarat line to Beaufort Station. The journey takes approximately two hours.
V/Line also offers bus services linking Beaufort with other towns around Victoria.
