BallanA quaint town built on the banks of the Werribee River, Ballan offers visitors a chance to relax and immerse themselves in the rich history of the town.
Sitting on the edge of the Victorian goldfields, tens of thousands of fortune hunters once flowed through Ballan on their way to the goldfields in Ballarat.
First settled in the 1830s, Ballan takes its name from a place in Ireland. Today the town is best known as an attractive town with a strong artistic community and numerous picnicking and swimming spots.
The local artists of Ballan have embarked on the ‘1,000 Weathervanes Initiative’, which means the town is now decorated with beautiful creations. Take a stroll through the town and see how many of these wonderful wind gadgets you can find.
Stop for lunch along the way at Mill Rose Cottage - a restaurant and quilt gallery in a restored Masonic Hall, just three minutes from the station.
A short distance from the station is Calendonia Park, which provides the perfect setting for laying out your picnic rug. There are facilities for swimming and BBQs and for those who like a challenge, the Pikes Reservoir is known for its trout.
The Ballan Golf Club is only a short walk from the station and allows players to enjoy the views of the Werribee River for most of the 18 holes.
For a fun day trip activity, the annual Ballan Autumn Festival takes place in March. Visitors can sample some of the freshest local produce, listen to the big band play, and see the town come to life.
Ballan is also home to Australia’s biggest annual heritage machinery fair which takes place in February each year, where you can peruse a great collection of vintage engines, cars and much more.
