The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest gallery in regional Australia. It houses a comprehensive collection of Australian art, including the actual Southern Cross flag.
Despite a few rips and burns, the flag has survived and is displayed in glass case in a low-lit room for preservation.
Getting thereV/Line trains between Ballarat and Melbourne (Southern Cross Station) run frequently and a one-way trip takes just over an hour.
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is located an easy five minute walk from Ballarat Station on Lydiard Street North, between Mair Street and Sturt Street. Check Google maps for walking directions.
Your V/Line ticket is valid for travel on the Ballarat town buses at no extra cost. If you’re travelling from a metropolitan station, you’ll also get free travel on trams, trains and buses. For more information see included metropolitan travel.
Tip: Travelling on V/Line during off-peak times is more convenient and cheaper!
