Anna Ryan, Senior Human Resources Consultant
I’m the Senior Human Resources Consultant for a large part
of the V/Line business: Regional Network Services and Infrastructure.
I’ve been in my job for 12 months now. Essentially I work
with managers looking after all manner of staffing issues for over 380 staff,
such as hiring new employees, providing support and advice, managing
performance and reviews, industrial relations issues, training and development.
Every day is different.
I’ve always worked in HR but when I saw the job at V/Line,
it was a great fit for me. It was well-known and I’d spent most of my childhood
on the train with V/Line getting to and from my home town of Strathmerton,
north of Shepparton. I was looking to make a fresh start in my life and coming
into an industry going through a lot of interesting and positive change was a
great decision. There’s a real sense that people understand what V/Line does
and how its importance will continue to grow.
I like the balance at V/Line. While it’s a professional,
fast-paced business, it’s less corporate and there’s the regional factor. I
can spend a lot of time out with staff around the state. I love going to a
depot and popping my head in to say hello to the teams across Victoria. It’s a
great big family.
I love my job. I’m working with staff across Victoria as well as sitting in management meetings at Head Office. It’s never dull, as
there’s so much variety and challenge. I’ve met many people and established
great friendships through this job.
The best part of my role is telling someone they’ve got a
job. You’re really changing someone’s life with that phone call, especially in
the bush. It’s a great feeling.
I’m really happy with what I’m doing now. It’s a fantastic
company because there are stacks of different divisions within V/Line. This
means you can move around and try lots of different things. I’ll never be
bored, that’s for sure.
