Today’s rail renaissance, with more services, new trains and improved infrastructure, signals a new era of growth and confidence across regional Victoria.
More than 2000 services every week
As the state’s regional public transport provider, we run more than 1400 train services and 600 coach services every week, helping a potential 1.3 million regional Victorian customers get from place to place.
We also offer services for Melburnians, as well as interstate and overseas visitors, who want to visit or work in the country. So our customers get to experience the best of country and city life.
More than 1300 staff
Friendly, caring and professional service is important, which is why we employ more than 1300 people across the state.
Many provide service to the travelling public, day in, day out at our stations or on board our trains. Others work around the clock operating and maintaining vital track and signalling for both freight and passenger trains.
Part of the community
V/Line acts as an important and vital member of the Victorian community and contributor to its economy.
We are committed to our role in the community now and in the future, and we value being a responsible, sustainable community leader and contributor.
To deliver on these commitments we are fully owned by the State, responsible to the Minister for Public Transport and funded on a not-for-profit basis.
More services
In September 2006, 401 extra rail services were introduced statewide, significantly increasing services to Victoria’s main regional centres of Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Traralgon and Seymour.
We've also added more carriages to our fleet, to cope with growing demand. See vline.com.au/expanding for more information.
Lower fares
In March 2007, V/Line dropped its fares by 20 per cent. Fares are still lower than 2002 prices.
Main rail infrastructure provider in regional Victoria
On 4 May 2007, V/Line assumed responsibility for Victoria’s regional rail network. This followed the completion of the Victorian Government’s buy-back of the network from Pacific National.
V/Line is now responsible for the operation and maintenance of 4100 kilometres of rail track across Victoria and into New South Wales. This management role now helps V/Line deliver better outcomes for both its passengers and freight customers.
