V/Line manages 3770 kilometres of passenger and freight railway lines across Victoria and into New South Wales.
This vast network of rail tracks, signals, level crossings, stations, bridges and other infrastructure must be regularly maintained to keep the railways safe and reliable.
The land around train lines – known as rail reserves – also requires maintenance to achieve appropriate rail safety, fire safety and weed management outcomes.
V/Line’s infrastructure division maintains this entire infrastructure through regular inspections and reporting across both the freight and passenger lines and through customer and community feedback.
Increasing demand on the railway network increases maintenance activities, and V/Line strives to find the balance about conducting its maintenance activities as well as keeping both the freight and passenger lines open for use. This is why the majority of maintenance activities happen at night, to ensure both passengers and users of the freight network are kept moving.
Further information about impacts on the railway network can be found at our disruption alerts page.
