Miriam WilliamsI’m new to V/Line and started about three months ago. Before joining I had lots of part time jobs, including waitressing, teaching piano and working as a theatre technician.
Now I’m a Services Officer, which means I’m based at a station selling people tickets, providing them with information and helping them get to where they want to go.
My role’s a little different from many Services Officers at V/Line because I move between three stations in the northern region (Swan Hill, Echuca and Mildura), covering the roles of other Services Officers so they can take holidays.
Working in three stations is interesting because it means I get to live and work in three different places. This is fantastic for someone like me who’s a bit of a gypsy, enjoys travelling around and finds it hard to stay in one place for too long. It’s great there are these sort of flexible job options to suit my type of personality.
V/Line’s a very community-minded, family company. All the people I work with are fabulous and they’ve been very welcoming. They’re the ones who make my work life so enjoyable. Station staff, bus drivers and conductors are all great.
The best part of my day is watching people pick up their family at the station. There are plenty of hugs and smiles. It’s a great moment to be a part of.
I’m working more hours and have less free time, but I’m actually doing a lot more in my life, which is great. I’m looking at buying a property and it’s only possible because of this role.
If my dream of being an Oscar-winning actress doesn’t happen, I’d definitely like to be a services manager or a shunter because I’d love to work more closely with trains.
